History of family and identity

The Gurrieri winery’s story is one of passion, farming wisdom, and family. Father Vincenzo, an electrician, and mother Graziella, a kindergarten teacher, both sharing a passion for winemaking, decided to purchase their first vineyard in their first year of marriage in 1972. That was the beginning of a story of producing excellent grapes that has now spanned over fifty years. Their children, Giovanni and Angela, both engineers, born and raised with their parents’ love for the countryside, continued the family tradition and decided to produce grapes, wine, and oil in Sicily, in Chiaramonte Gulfi, in the province of Ragusa. The dream of making a Sicilian wine that represents the identity of its homeland began in 2010 with the first bottling.

The Cerasuolo of Vittoria

We are located in the countryside of the Hyblaean Mountains, in the fertile Val di Noto, the classic area of Sicily’s only DOCG, Cerasuolo di Vittoria.

After years of cultivation to produce wine and oil for family use, nine hectares of vineyards were gradually brought into production in various districts between Chiaramonte Gulfi, Mazzarrone, and Comiso, in the area most suited to viticulture. Thus, the family tradition became a business, but a niche one, producing wines with a strong and elegant character, capable of reflecting their homeland and enhancing it through its finest fruits.

unchanged beauty

The family still works together today, organically cultivating native grape varieties such as Nero d’Avola, Frappato, Grillo, and Moscato, along with Syrah, the only international grape variety, well-adapted to the Sicilian terroir. Father Vincenzo, “Don Vicè,” to whom the Cerasuolo di Vittoria Classico DOCG is dedicated, continues his tireless and passionate work in the vineyard. Mother Graziella handles the administrative side of the business and looks after the family. Her children dedicate the “Donna Grazia” line to her, featuring various expressions of Nero d’Avola and Frappato vinified as white and rosé.

Vineyards between the sea and the mountains

Nine hectares of vineyards spread across five districts at altitudes ranging from 260 to 300 meters above sea level. The wines of the Gurrieri collection are made from vines cultivated with the utmost respect for nature, without the use of chemicals. The calcareous soils with clayey highlights lend richness and complexity to the wines, while the breezy Mediterranean climate, characterized by significant temperature variations, contributes to their unique aromas and flavors. Average rainfall is around 430 mm per year.

Sustainability

Saving the Earth today can no longer be delegated to future generations. Time is running out, and the issue of environmental sustainability is increasingly at the center of current affairs and individual and collective choices. At the Gurrieri winery, resource exploitation, investment, and technological integration combine to enhance not only current potential, but also future potential, because for us, our land is a precious gift.
This is a concept that has always accompanied our agricultural choices—the choice of organic farming that respects our company philosophy. This is why we avoid herbicides, synthetic chemicals, and genetically modified organisms (GMOs), and instead employ manual soil management techniques (such as green manure and organic fertilization), as well as grape cluster and canopy management. Drip irrigation systems maximize water efficiency and ensure that water reaches only where it is most needed, maximizing water conservation.
